Tourism and peace may not be two things you automatically link together, but the theme for the 2024 World Tourism Day is just that – Tourism and Peace.
There is a lot of upheaval and war in the world today. But tourism enables us to learn about others. By visiting other countries, spending time with other races and cultures, learning more about each other, we can reconsider any stereotypes and prejudices we may hold.
Tourism, therefore, is a way to find out more about other people and become closer to them. Visiting other countries is an educational experience, expanding our own horizons and knowledge.
With this theme, the United Nations “wants to highlight the vital role of this sector in fostering peace and understanding between nations and cultures and in supporting reconciliation processes.”
World Tourism Day this year is on the 27th September 2024.
