The Soil Association is working with groups in Wales to encourage people to grow different fruits and vegetables.

The Soil Association aims to transform the ways in which people grow veg and eat.

The rising cost of living and worries about the environment have meant that people who want to buy a wide range of veggies, such as Okra and chillies can find that they are having to travel longer distances to get the veggies they want.

This obviously has an impact on the environment due to travel and the cost of travel, and increasingly expensive veggies. The SA is encouraging people to grow their own to reduce the impact on the environment.

Of course, there are also other advantages to growing your own veggies -

  • There is the satisfaction of growing your own. Seeing your crops flourish and grow.
  • Home grown food always tastes better. That might be our minds playing tricks on us, but it always seems to.
  • There are no travel costs as your veggies are right there in your own home.
  • As you don't have to travel, you are also reducing the cost of travel and your carbon footprint.
  • Gardening is also good for our health. Getting out there in the fresh air and burning calories with a bit of gardening is good for us.
  • Gardening can also be adapted to suit your own abilities and needs.  Some people might want a big patch, whilst others might want to grow herbs on their kitchen window sill.

Whatever you want to grow, growing your own veggies is a satisfying and enjoyable thing to do. It is also good for you and our planet.
