It’s National Nestbox Week from 14th to 21st February. We need to put nestboxes in our gardens, on our balconies, our workplaces and elsewhere.
But why do we need to do this?
The world has changed. There are two main reasons why we need to build nestboxes for birds -
Modern buildings tend to have less nooks and crannies than older building.
Our parks, woodlands and gardens are tidier and neater than they were. This means that birds cannot always find the natural holes that that they would use to build their homes and nests in.
If birds do not have homes to nest in, this can result in the population of many bird species going down.
We can all do our bit by adding a nestbox or two or three to our gardens, our balconies, workplaces and anywhere it is suitable.
Nestboxes encourage birds to come to our gardens. It also means that we can watch these beautiful birds as they fly around.
Spending time in your garden and with nature is also good for your mental and physical health, so adding a nestbox to your garden is a win-win for you and the birds.
There are many useful videos online that tell you how to make nestboxes, or you can always buy them from garden centres and stores, so give it a go.
