Baked beans are a popular food for many people. Baked beans on toast. Baked beans on jacket potatoes, in chilli etc. It is a very versatile food. But many people may not realise that baked beans, or haricot beans as they are actually called, are grown in countries such as Ethiopia, China, Canada and America. Scientists and farmers have now been developing a haricot seed that could potentially grow in colder climates, like the UK. This may not sound too important, but if we think of the environmental impact of transporting foods across the world, growing haricot beans in colder climates could reduce this environmental impact. Eating local foods reduces a countries carbon footprint as there is less travel. Walking to the supermarket or shop to buy your food can also reduce our own personal carbon footprint. So growing baked beans in the UK could actually be an important way of reducing the impact on our planet.
