Crises may occur quite abruptly and in response to a specific event e.g. a debilitating accident. When this happens, the person often has no previous experience which they can draw on to help them cope. In other cases, the crisis may occur as a result of multiple events. The individual may have been managing to cope but one more unfavorable event tips the balance and they become snowed under. In either case the person is likely to suffer from mental health problems or sometimes develop a mental health disorder.
Different people have different physical and psychological responses to life changing events. Furthermore, they also have different coping mechanisms and respond differently to counselling and treatment. Whilst some may have the inner resources and social support networks to deal with crises without outside help other may struggle markedly and reply on interventions to help them get through.
Everybody encounters both good and bad times as they move through life. Some people do not cope as well with the bad times as others. The ability to cope with difficult periods in one’s life, can be influenced by both internal and external factors. Some people have the personality and life skills to deal with anything they confront with pragmatism and acceptance; adjusting to the situation and moving on with their life. Others though, can become disillusioned, depressed and lost for a solution of how to move forward.
The 'Helping people cope with Grief or Crisis- Getting through difficult times’ ebook provides a fascinating insight into grief and traumatic events and also provides the reader with a solid understanding of how to support others who are having a difficult time. This ebook is an ideal reference for counsellors or anybody who would like to assist someone in a difficult situation.
