Like pumpkins and squash, marrows can have a bushy or trailing habit. Courgettes are marrows which are picked when they are not yet mature. At one time large marrows were favoured for culinary purposes, but smaller courgettes are often preferred today. Zucchini is another name for courgette. It seems to have originated from a dwarf bush variety of marrow which was sonamed. Marrows range from fruits which are ovoid and 30cm or more in length to those which are more cylindrical in shape. The outer skins may be green, creamy white or green with white stripes or mottled markings. For all intents and purposes there is very little difference between marrows (zucchinis, courgettes) and squashes. In fact, the so-called ‘Summer Squashes’ referred to in the United States includes the courgette or zucchini. Like pumpkins, marrows and its variants are also eaten as a vegetable.
